Since moving to Amarillo, I’ve been drawn to downtown, everything from the history to the revitalization. So when Downtown Amarillo Inc. needed a logo, I was honored to get to submit my concepts. Downtown Amarillo Inc. was formed in 2008 for the purpose of implementing the Downtown Strategic Action Plan. I was working at the Amarillo Globe-News at the time and our Publisher, Les Simpson was a board member. He gave the artists a challenge of coming up with a logo for the newly formed organization. I submitted the following two logos and they chose the latter. Now I see this logo all over downtown and I am proud that I am now a part of the downtown revitalization effort. Which one do you like?

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s summer! Every year Data Flow helps put together the Parks & Recreation Guide and Summer in the City. Summer in the city is a kid’s guide to events and activities in the City of Amarillo. We went with a “Wish you were here” postcard theme for this year’s guide. Check out some illustrations I did for the guide.
If you see one, grab one! They are free and full of things that will keep you child busy the entire summer.
Someone said, “Hey, you should start a blog.” Ok. So here it is.
The birth of my blog coincides with my Son’s first Birthday! Happy Birthday Mason. Here he is digging into some cake.
As I am wrting this, our new business cards just came in for Data Flow. I’ve been working here since March. One of my first projects here was a complete redesign of the Data Flow logo. At first Glance of the original logo, its something that desperately needed updating.
I added the green lines background. I think it completes the look.
I did some research on the font. It’s is called computer. Yes, computer. I’m sure the people of 1974 thought this would be the end-all font for the computer age. Unfortunately, when I see this font I immediately think of green screen computers, and the movie Tron
. Even “computer video game systems” of the 1980s were using this font.
Along with my creative director, we pleaded with the owner of the company to end his love affair with this font. It didn’t take long to revamp the logo into something that is fresh and eventually recognizable.
Hopefully this is easier on the eyes than the previous logo. I took Helvetica and tweaked it into a more rounded font. We used a light blue, gray, and white as our new primary colors. We added an arrow to the capital “F” which will eventually become a design element in our marketing.
